Melville Family Gravesite
Woodlawn Cemetary, Bronx, NYC - opened in 1863 - a National Historic Landmark. Herman's monument is a smooth blank scroll on rough stone; his wife Elizabeth's is a cross. The couple's children and grandchildren are buried to one side and behind. The first to be buried in the plot (situated just to the left of Herman) was their first son Malcolm who died in 1867 at the age of eighteen. A cenotaph for second son Stanwix, who died in 1886 in California, is located to the left of Malcolm. Vistors to the site have left rocks, shells, and other mementos atop Herman's grave stone. The scroll motif on the stone appears on several monuments throughout Woodlawn Cemetery; however, Herman's bears no inscription.
